Abstract

Democracy has its roots in Greek civilization, and it is a form of government that allows the citizen to exercise power himself, either directly, what is called direct democracy, or by choosing representatives for them, what is called representative democracy. As for the concept of participatory democracy, it appeared in the sixties of the last century, and aims to strengthen the role of the citizen by involving them in the development of public policies and decision-making related to public affairs, particularly at the local level, finding mechanisms and procedures to ensure this. This theme deals with the study of participatory democracy from the point of view of the factors and reasons for its emergence (a), as well as its objectives and means to achieve them (b), highlighting the Algerian reality in this field, and the experiences of other countries.
