Islamic Endowment as a Mechanism for Achieving Sustainable Development
Main Article Content
Abstract
The endowment (waqf) has been a cornerstone of Islamic civilization, deeply intertwined with principles of sustainability that are increasingly relevant in today’s context. This study explores how waqf, rooted in Sharia law, contributes to sustainable development by examining its impact on the key pillars of sustainability: economic, social, and environmental dimensions.
Historically, waqf has supported various public services and infrastructure projects, playing a crucial role in economic stability and growth. This research investigates how waqf-funded initiatives create job opportunities, stimulate local economies, and drive economic resilience while adhering to Sharia principles.
In addition, waqf has significant social implications, promoting equity and cohesion by funding educational, healthcare, and poverty alleviation programs. The study delves into how waqf contributes to reducing social inequalities and improving access to essential services, fostering social solidarity, and enhancing community well-being.
The environmental aspect of waqf is also crucial, as it traditionally involves the preservation of natural resources for future generations. The study examines how waqf can support environmental sustainability through investments in green projects, sustainable land use, and natural resource conservation.
By analyzing both historical and contemporary examples, this research aims to highlight how waqf can be leveraged to address global sustainability challenges, demonstrating its potential as a powerful mechanism for achieving long-term sustainability.
