Abstract

As a result of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property's inability to cover the procedural aspects of the patent system, international efforts shifted toward proposing a new international framework for inventions, embodied in the Washington Treaty on Patent Cooperation of 1970. This treaty offers several advantages, the most significant of which is the establishment of simplified procedures for international patent protection by introducing a centralized system for filing and examining international patent applications. This approach reduces procedural complexities that inventors and companies previously faced when seeking patent protection in multiple countries simultaneously, thereby saving time and financial resources.

In addition to streamlining procedures, the Washington Treaty offers various benefits to its member states, particularly developing countries. These countries receive technical services provided under the treaty, including technical support and information related to inventions and innovations. This form of cooperation helps developing nations enhance their technological and industrial capacities, directly contributing to their economic growth. By leveraging the unified international patent protection system, these countries can attract foreign investments and increase their competitiveness in global markets, opening up new opportunities for economic growth and technological advancement.

Thus, the Washington Treaty is not only a legal framework for safeguarding inventors' rights but also an effective tool for promoting economic development in contracting states, as it provides the legal and technical infrastructure needed for developing nations to achieve their economic and industrial goals.
