Teaching Philosophy to Children according to Gareth Matthews: limitations and aspirations
Abstract:Although teaching philosophy to children is an unusual activity and does not fall into the common pedagogy in schools, the young child, according to Matthews, can naturally engage in the practice of philosophical thinking, so s/he builds the argument and formulates the question if there is someone who directs and helps them carefully and patiently. Based on this, the necessary ability, qualifications, and sufficient willingness to engage in serious philosophical dialogues with adults, not only as recipients but as parties and partners in the discussion, Matthews seeks through his work to enhance thinking and critical skills and to develop philosophical questions contained in children's spontaneous comments on a variety of topics, as well as focusing on exploring and introducing the philosophical aspect of children's literature.
