Abstract

New Materialisms, or Neo-materialisms, are contemporary theoretical frameworks that emerged in the late 1990s, notably through the independent contributions of Manuel DeLanda and Rosi Braidotti. These frameworks aim to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries by integrating the sciences and the humanities through an interdisciplinary approach. This perspective emphasizes what Donna Haraway terms naturecultures and what Bruno Latour describes as collectives, challenging Cartesian dualisms that rigidly separate mind and matter. New materialisms foreground the material dimension while acknowledging the interdependence of mind and matter, thereby reshaping the production, forms, and meanings of knowledge. The movement encompasses at least four primary currents: vital materialism, speculative realism, object-oriented ontology, and performative materialism, reflecting a pluralistic rather than monolithic orientation. This study seeks to clarify the philosophical foundations of new materialisms, their methodological innovations in conceptualizing matter, and their ethical and political implications, while also addressing major critiques and ongoing debates surrounding this transformative contemporary perspective in philosophy and cultural theory
