Similarities and differences: The Arabic and German languages in comparison

  • Nabila Chahrour Université Oran 2

Abstract

This article highlights the prevalence and importance of the Arabic language, noting that around 370 million people worldwide speak Arabic as their native language and another 467 million speak it as a second or foreign language. For learners in Algeria, especially students of German, comparing their native Arabic and German is a challenge due to the significant differences between the two languages.
The article examines both similarities and differences between Arabic and German.
The similarities include grammatical genders, a case system for nouns, different methods of forming plurals and the adaptation of adjectives in gender and case to the associated noun, as well as differences in formal and informal address.

The differences between Arabic and German are discussed in detail. These include writing systems, article use, differences in cases, tenses, modal verbs, the subjunctive II, phonological differences, plural forms, cultural differences and differences in vocabulary. These differences are reflected in grammar, writing system, phonology and cultural aspects and result from the different linguistic families and the different historical and cultural developments of both languages.
