Abstract

The disjunction between being and appearing, concealment, lying, and hypocrisy are vices that tarnish the universal moral code. The saying "clothes do not make the monk" takes on its full meaning in this context, where the author, Marguerite de Navarre, aims to expose, both in the narratives of the stories and in the commentary, the creature, its secret desires, and flaws, while emphasizing the exemplary value of the vicious or virtuous characters.
