Abstract

To engage directly in the debate on multilingualism in Africa would be inappropriate without first considering the specific context of the situation that concerns us in this discussion. Furthermore, to speak of postmodernity in relation to the African continent when some countries have not yet moved beyond their postcolonial past would be anachronistic, unrealistic, and even counterproductive. Moreover, it is this very postmodernity that has brought its share of innovations, without which African countries would continue to be at a disadvantage. Indeed, one of the major challenges facing Africans is managing the new communication systems that are rapidly pervading the world today. Communication, the sheer volume of available information, and the development of scientific knowledge have led people to develop new social relationships that are not necessarily found in all African countries. And in these new relationships, language occupies a central place.
