Abstract
Interpretation not only serves to uphold the truth of discourse, but also plays a crucial pedagogical role in facilitating public access to its meaning. This is the subject of this article, which traces the historical development of hermeneutics, or the philosophy of interpretation, and examines its conceptual evolution from the classical era to the present day. It explores the revolution this approach has brought to the study of texts, particularly in the humanities. Hermeneutics originated with theologians. We will also examine its most prominent theorists, beginning with Martin Luther in the classical period, followed by Schleiermacher, Wilhelm Dilthey, Heidegger, Gadamer, and finally Ricoeur. Thus, hermeneutics, as an analytical tool, addresses the problem of textual interpretation in general, whether historical or religious, focusing on the relationship between the interpreter and the text.
