Abstract

Is philosophy universal or national? That is, is it universal, concerning all of humanity, or national, pertaining to a specific people through their intellectual output? This is the question Taha Abd al-Rahman attempts to answer, even going so far as to challenge the claim of "philosophy's universality." He raises several objections, the most important of which is the connection between philosophy and its historical, social, linguistic, and literary context. Every philosophy is the product of a specific historical context and social sphere; no philosophy exists without this historical context and social sphere. Furthermore, language is the locus in which philosophical discourse is formed, and this discourse cannot be formed without being influenced by its linguistic context.
