Abstract
French colonialism sought to consolidate its presence in Algeria by eradicating the spirit that united Algerians, instilled in them self-confidence and resilience, and that spirit was Islam. To this end, it employed numerous methods to implement its plan. However, it consistently encountered resistance, including the Association of Algerian Muslim Scholars. This association prioritized the religious issue in Algeria—specifically, the separation of religion and state—and defended it due to its inherent importance and its profound impact on the nation's psyche. The aim of this research paper is to shed light on one of the most prominent issues championed by the Association of Algerian Muslim Scholars: the separation of religion and state. This will be done by examining their official publication, Al-Basair II, which reflected the core of their advocacy.
