Abstract

Translation is, and always has been, a source of fascination for anthropologists. This fundamental science has proven to be a true bridge connecting different cultures and civilizations across the globe. However, this cultural exchange has, over time, created certain cultural interferences during the translation process, whether at the cultural or even linguistic level. This presentation will explore this theme, focusing particularly on translation in film. We will begin by providing an overview of the cinematic audiovisual medium, then discuss the advent of talking pictures and the communication challenges they engendered, before moving on to the various translation techniques that emerged, namely subtitling and dubbing, and consequently, the appearance of these cultural and linguistic interferences.
