Abstract

The policies of Emir Abdelkader were not a cold, abstract product, nor were they the result of a personal vision, merely completing or translating a vast legacy of "politics" whose currents surged towards the beginning of the eighteenth century. Nor were they simply a distinctive and pioneering political approach. Rather, they were more than that; they represented a remarkable interplay between the needs of daily life and theoretical horizons, ultimately establishing a set of concerns and anxieties that remain powerfully present in Arab and Islamic consciousness.
