Abstract

Writing for a general audience—novels, plays, poetry, paintings—is a matter of commitment that must guide the writer in choosing the themes addressed and the linguistic, pictorial, or auditory medium that will convey them to the public. Why write? This question, in fact, leads us to consider the intellectual's role and place within the intellectual community.
