Abstract

Human beings are prisoners of their beliefs, regardless of their intellectual level. Therefore, the theme of culture cannot be confined to what we call the elite. The vast majority of society, referred to as "the people," is also capable of creating its own culture, embodied in a set of beliefs, myths, customs, traditions, and behaviors that govern its relationship with existence. This is something that schools of cultural criticism have recognized, while attempting to give an academic character to studies concerning folklore. It was not surprising that the novel, since its inception, has utilized this folk culture in its attempt to touch upon the details of daily human experience and to explore the implicit systemic meanings hidden behind linguistic signs. An example of this is the novel "I Seek Refuge in God" by the Algerian novelist Said Boutajine. To what extent is folklore present in this novel? And to what extent does it fulfill the semantic function that the author defined as he recounts the details of the Black Decade?
