The Phenomenon of dialogism and Polyphony: Identification of the Arab Voice in Gabriel García Márquez’s La mala hora.
Abstract
The Arab element in La mala hora has not been the center of interest compared to the same in other novels by Gabriel García Márquez, since it occupies a secondary place in the development of the plot. For this reason, our interest in the present work is to show the influence of the Arabic in the author’s narrative, which is based on several real factors, within his family environment or throughout Latin American society. In addition, we identify the Arab voice that manages to express itself within dialogical encounters between different ideologies, so the reader can discover the image and the inner world of the Arab within a people characterized by social and political conflicts. It is obvious, then, that the presence of the Arabic, in the novel, leaves some traces of thought and neutral mind, inherited since the arrival of this element to the Latin American continent. Finally, our purpose is to study the author’s intention through the participation of an Arab pacifist voice in his fictional project.
