Abstract
This study by investigates the mechanisms shaping the "symbolic market" within the contemporary Algerian literary field, focusing on the complex interplay between literary elites, political authority, and the press. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological framework (notably the concepts of "field," "symbolic capital," and "market"), the authors analyze how these actors collaboratively determine the value and legitimacy attributed to literary works and authors.
The paper highlights the dominance of Francophone literature and the cultural divide between Arabic and French publishing in national media and publishing houses (such as Éditions Barzakh). It illustrates how press coverage and literary prizes operate as instruments of critical legitimation or marginalization. Furthermore, the study addresses the implicit collusion between state power and media in defining "legitimate literature," reflecting the profound influence of language politics and symbolic capital in Algeria's cultural economy
