Evolving Writing Styles in Sports Journalism: Contemporary Trends in Romanian Local and Regional Press - A Case Study

Abstract
This interdisciplinary study integrates journalism and stylistic analysis to examine contemporary sports discourse in the Romanian local press. It adopts a pragmatic linguistic approach to analyze the language used in local sports journalism, focusing on two regional newspapers, Jurnal arădean and Glasul Aradului. A dataset of approximately 10,000 sports articles from these publications, spanning print and online editions, provides a robust foundation for both qualitative discourse analysis and quantitative content analysis. The research identifies common linguistic and stylistic features, including the use of colloquialisms, journalistic clichés, and English-derived neologisms, while also revealing broader linguistic trends reflective of Romania’s evolving local media landscape. By focusing on regional newspapers, this study fills an important gap, offering a localized perspective that complements wider theoretical frameworks in sports journalism research. Covering the period 2019–2023, the analysis highlights how sports journalism remains a resilient branch of specialized media amid the challenges posed by the 2007 media crisis in Romania. Ultimately, the study underscores the role of local sports journalism in capturing societal dynamics and conveying the competitive ethos inherent in regional sports reporting, while inviting further comparative and cross-cultural research in this field.
