Who Owns the Cultural Heritage of a Heritage Language?

Abstract

Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Montenegrin came to Austria as heritage languages in 1991 after the downfall of SFR Yugoslavia. This empirical paper, which reflects on fundamental principles, explicitly addresses pedagogical topics and concepts of heritage language education as state-funded L1 teaching mother tongue instruction (MTI) in Austria that are put up for discussion. It addresses how much a particular cultural heritage interpretation is instrumentalised in identity policy processes. As a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), it also examines the connection between ideas of culture and the multilingual upbringing of multilingual children of the third generation in Austria.
