Abstract

A general study of the communication/media phenomenon on an organized intellectual level requires a significant historiographical effort, given the overlap and complexity it experienced during a period long considered pivotal in human history. This period was characterized by profound transformations in political, social, and economic structures, as well as in the intellectual frameworks that accompanied and sometimes drove them. The methodological and structural fragmentation of philosophical (systemic) endeavors led to the emergence of independent branches of knowledge—which quickly gained autonomy with their own pioneers and theorists—and adopted new mechanisms for integration within the processes of social developments and the active cultural and economic structures in European and American societies. Ironically, those with imported scientific specializations embarked on this endeavor amidst the turmoil of material conflict (war) between the European colonizers of America and the colonial powers in France and England. Attempts to theorize communication studies emerged within the framework of epistemological observation of the various phenomena it generated (both as technological innovations and as a foundational intellectual discourse), but the effort was primarily driven by... Those who embraced the new philosophical conception, whom Walter Benjamin called the thinkers of the new or light age, but the legendary Aladdin's tree (cutting one branch so that two branches may grow in its place) quickly did its work within the scope of this transformation, for there came those who brought forth from the womb of philosophy sciences and from the womb of sciences branches, specializations and fields of knowledge that never knew stillness and gentleness.
