Sports events between political use and the waste of public funds

Since ancient times, sports have contributed to emphasizing noble values such as acquaintance and tolerance, and has reached such a degree of importance now that countries and peoples consider it an area for self-affirmation and the development of the feeling of national identity and the sense of belonging to a community. However, their organization has not escaped the interference of the political intrusion in their employment, even at the expense of wasting public money, so that sports events have become nowadays an instrument used in ideological discourses, aiming to gain political legitimacy, buying social peace, while neglecting the basic development issues.
