Abstract

The museum is a modern institution: while collecting stems from a very ancient practice, the idea of establishing public institutions dedicated to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting works of art only took hold in the eighteenth century, when museums were entrusted with a fundamental task: establishing selection criteria no longer linked to personal taste (for example, the taste of an amateur), but rather based on a very general aesthetic quality, recognized as universal or at least shared by the society in which the museum is situated. However, since the second half of the twentieth century, the museum—as an institution—has been subjected to several criticisms, which we will summarize in broad terms.
