Abstract

Democratic education is not, in itself, a single, unified educational system or program. Rather, it comprises the overarching rational frameworks for cultivating and developing a national educational approach that ensures complete equality of opportunity for all citizens and guarantees, equally, quality educational services for everyone. To achieve this goal, democratic education, as defined by John Dewey, Paulo Freire, and Pierre Bourdieu, is essentially a resistance to all forms of reproducing cultural, economic, and political oppression and exploitation within society. While this democratic education strives to cultivate cognitive values, it equally strives to cultivate the values of citizenship, individual rights, social justice, and the universality of humankind. The criterion for an educational system's adherence to this paradigm is both quantitative and qualitative, relating to the system's outputs and its effectiveness in training, qualifying, educating, and preparing everyone for positive participation in social life on an equal footing.
