Abstract

The hijab represents one of the defining symbols of religious identity, and of the various affiliations within the Islamic religious community, while simultaneously reflecting the diversity of reasons for wearing it. Despite the numerous and varied changes in its form, design, and pattern—to the point where its codes require study and decipherment—it has retained its essential name and its expressions of identity and belonging.
