Abstract
This research aims to study the efforts of contemporary Sudanese historians in editing and studying manuscripts during the period 1504-1821 CE. It demonstrates that the early Sudanese output drew its approach from the Arab experience in writing history, which was linked to the arrival of the Arabs and the spread of Islam in Sudan. The importance of this research stems from the significance of studying the manuscript heritage housed in the Sudanese National Archives, as well as in other institutions, through the efforts of contemporary Sudanese historians. Furthermore, the research offers a well-documented scholarly study that represents a genuine addition to the Arabic library and covers an important area of research that has not received sufficient attention. The study employs a historical research methodology to present the reality of the contemporary Sudanese experience in editing manuscripts, and a descriptive and analytical methodology to discuss and analyze this Sudanese experience, ultimately arriving at conclusions and recommendations that will, God willing, ensure the research's success. The study addresses several key themes, including: the historical background of manuscript heritage in Sudan and its types; an examination of the beginnings of the Arab-Islamic document as a result of the arrival of the Arabs and the spread of Islam; its impact on the writing of Sudanese history; and the influence of intellectual, cultural, civilizational, and political currents on it. The study focuses on the efforts and activities of contemporary Sudanese historians in editing manuscripts from the period 1504-1821 CE, such as Yusuf Fadl Hassan, Muhammad Ibrahim Abu Salim, Makki Shibeika, and others. The study presents examples of the most important manuscripts that have been edited and studied, such as (Tabaqat Wad Dayf Allah, the manuscript of the scribe of the granary, the manuscript of the history of the kings of Sennar, etc.).
