Abstract

Historical writing was one of the most important intellectual arts that flourished in Algeria during the Ottoman era, especially that produced under the direction of the ruling authority. In this regard, the manuscript of Ahmed Ibn Hattal al-Tilimsani's treatise entitled "The Journey of Muhammad al-Kabir Bey of the Arabs of Algeria to the Algerian Sahara," edited by Professor Muhammad Abdelkrim in 1969, is considered a model that can be relied upon in understanding Ottoman Algerian history. A socio-historical comparison of this work requires that it not be viewed as a mere repository of information, but rather as texts that reveal the political, social, economic, and cultural conditions of 18th-century Algeria, such as the interplay between temporal and spiritual authority, the relationship of integration/rebellion between the tribe and the Sufi order with the central authority, the dominance of legalistic culture in historical writings and literary expressions, in contrast to the decline of the rational and technical sciences, and the reliance of the Turkish Beylik on intellectual and religious elites who defended it in the name of religion.
