Abstract

Between the justification of ostracism based on respect for freedom of choice and the preservation of human dignity—and many other justifications—we chose the right to life. But what about the patient's suffering? What about the pain and exhaustion of the family? Palliative care emerged as a way to care for the patient and bring comfort to the family, ethicalizing medicine, or rather, rehumanizing medicine after it had become merely an administrative process, an interaction with a physical body reduced to the nature of its illness and how to deal with it. Palliative care is a practical re-examination of the right to life, championed by international organizations such as the European HOPE organization, which has presented many theories on the subject. Through this research paper, we aim to present an analytical study of one of these theories: the Kerring Theory of the American Jean Watson, answering the question: What is palliative care? And what are the ethical principles upon which Watson's theory is based?
