Abstract

Traditional crafts are a vital resource with a promising future for Algeria, especially given the country's exquisite handcrafted products. This comes after a period of neglect following the introduction of modern technology into daily life. Reviving traditional crafts is essential, as they serve as a vital tool for preserving the history and heritage of any nation by passing on their fundamentals to future generations. Moreover, they provide a livelihood for many. Algerian society is deeply rooted in history, encompassing Chaoui, Kabyle, Mzab, and Tuareg influences. This rich cultural heritage reflects the diverse customs and traditions passed down through generations and across different civilizations, resulting in a rich and varied array of craft activities. This diversity is further evidenced by the symbols and designs used in these crafts. The various symbolic forms inscribed on handicrafts serve as definitive testaments, depicting the ethnography of each people in forms, texts, and meanings that transcend abstraction. The unique characteristics of each craft lend it distinction and make it a subject of interest. Weaving is among the skills that express women's folk art in Algeria, and pottery is also of great importance in Algerian society. This necessitates preserving them as a kind of national heritage and a symbol as a historical given, with its multiple cultural and temporal backgrounds. However, its connection to these two crafts has given them a kind of anthropological survey, as it mimics the reality that the Algerian family lived through generations. This is because it was embodied in everything that touches the daily life of the Algerian before and during the French colonial period, even though there are those who consider it a message of generations through time. It was also associated with tattoos on the body and even on paintings and murals. Textiles were a privilege of women, especially in the blending of colors and shapes. There were special carpets for Algerian family occasions, as the bride was prepared with everything handmade. Therefore, she took care of every detail of the trousseau herself, as the bedding was considered one of the most important marriage rituals that a woman carefully acquired. All of this naturally led to the discovery of new symbols, especially after the family marriages that took place between the Algerian tribes, contributing to the peak of Algerian cultural diversity over the decades.
