Abstract

The Arabic Maqama is the most prominent literary and artistic phenomenon of the Abbasid era, as it was formed and considered a unique product and creation that impressed its connoisseurs. Its composition was known for its rapid spread and imitation, and its topics and purposes were numerous. Sometimes it was written for preaching and guidance, sometimes to teach the young the Arabic language and its beauty, and sometimes to entertain the ears and relieve the distressed. This is the main purpose for which it was created, as we have concluded, due to its association with humor since its emergence. As for the noble purpose that was its essence, it was to criticize society and expose its flaws in order to reform it and correct the vile qualities that were brilliantly portrayed in the characters of the Arabic Maqama. The conversation of Isa Ibn Hisham to Al-Muwaylihi came as a new style and a satirical and critical tool for his society in a biting way that departed from the old tradition of the Maqama writers, and came close to the style of resistance through satire to a great extent.
