Abstract

Modern human selfishness has reached its peak, a consequence of the relentless and excessive exploitation of nature. Environmental problems such as desertification, climate pollution, and the expanding ozone hole are clear evidence of this destructive selfishness. This has led contemporary philosophical discourse to revisit this global catastrophe, which now threatens the very existence of humanity. It has compelled philosophy to re-examine the question of ethics within the field of cosmology as a necessity to overcome the disillusionment of the modern century, stemming from the excessive and irrational exploitation of nature. This is the approach taken by Hans Jonas, who attempted to construct a new ethical framework for human responsibility towards the environment (the universe). Did Jonas succeed in this endeavor? And can the ethics of responsibility, as envisioned by Jonas, be considered a guarantee for overcoming modern humanity's disillusionment with environmental preservation?
