Abstract

This article  re-examines the intellectual and philosophical polemic between Jacques Rancière and Pierre Bourdieu regarding the intersection of sociology, philosophy, and political theory. The author details Rancière’s critique of Bourdieu's critical sociology, accusing it of perpetuating a "scholastic myth" that mirrors the Platonic division between those who possess scientific knowledge and those who remain trapped in opinion and domination.

The study contrasts Bourdieu's framework of social reproduction and unconscious domination with Rancière's fundamental axiom of the "equality of intelligences" and autonomous political emancipation. By confronting sociological determinism with political subjectivation, the paper demonstrates how this debate goes beyond a academic disagreement to address foundational questions about democracy, the nature of critique, and the role of intellectuals.
