Abstract

What do we know today about rural society in Algeria? This article seeks to address this question through the findings of a research project initiated two years ago on the former socialist villages in Algeria. The project aims to examine a significant social dimension that has long been neglected by the social sciences. Drawing on empirical fieldwork conducted in several former socialist villages in western Algeria, the study provides a sociological assessment of the rural development project that was once ambitiously promoted under the name of the Agrarian Revolution. More specifically, it investigates the long-term social outcomes of this development policy and seeks to answer a central question: What remains today of the one thousand socialist villages established during the Agrarian Revolution?
