Abstract

In “The City Within the Human Being: Materials for a Theory of Dwelling,” Vincent Cespedes develops an original philosophical interpretation of urban life by arguing that people do not merely inhabit cities; cities also inhabit those who live in them. Through five conceptual dimensions—memory, energy, seed, metacity, and shaker city—the author explains how the city shapes personal identity, collective memory, creativity, and social relationships. Urban space is presented not only as a physical environment but also as an existential and emotional experience that transforms individuals through encounters, shared histories, and cultural diversity. In contrast, the concept of the “metacity” represents the dehumanizing effects of standardization, segregation, bureaucracy, and globalization, where human bonds gradually disappear. Cespedes ultimately advocates a human-centered city founded on hospitality, solidarity, and civic coexistence. His theory of dwelling emphasizes that authentic urban life emerges through participation, mutual recognition, and the continuous interaction between individuals and the city they collectively embody.
