Abstract

The world is currently undergoing profound transformations in the structure of the global system and a reformulation of many visions and concepts. As we enter the second millennium, we face rapid changes that impose two choices, with no third option: confrontation and asserting ourselves, or seeking ways to hide and isolate ourselves, hoping the storm will pass with minimal damage. But the storm is lurking and may uproot everything fragile and young. So where can identity be positioned in the face of what the other calls for in terms of globalization and the sweeping away of all particularity? What does identity mean? Does culture have an identity? Where do we stand in relation to the other? And what is our relationship with the other?
