Abstract

Algeria has witnessed several transformations across various fields, including the cultural sphere, from the colonial period onward, up to the present day. These transformations and changes have had a profound impact, both in shaping and fueling certain ideas and ideologies, and in undermining others that were deeply rooted and prevalent in the Algerian individual, such as their identity, which has been subtly and overtly eroded. This has led a segment of intellectuals, if not the elite, to recognize the importance of using theater to solidify the principle of Algerian identity at times, and at other times to explore it. Therefore, the following questions arise, forming the core of our discussion: What is the current state of Algerian theater in light of the transformations the country has undergone? What role does theater, as an art form, play in establishing and preserving Algerian identity? How can we categorize contemporary Algerian theater?
