Abstract

Researchers have noted the diminishing role of public libraries as places to read books, especially with the emergence of electronic book publishing via the internet. This is precisely what major information technology companies are striving to achieve by attempting to launch the world's largest digital library. Information has become one of the most important issues of our time, growing in importance with each passing year, leading to what has been termed the Information Revolution. The success of nations and institutions is now measured by the extent of their information resources. Libraries, like any other institution, have their role and are naturally influenced by and interact with information and communication technologies. It has become imperative for libraries to embrace this modern technology and this role, given that we live in the information age and are witnessing the rise of the internet at the beginning of this century.
