Technical Translation and the Skills of the Specialized Translator
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper explores the distinctive nature of technical translation by examining its characteristics, translation process, and the core competencies required of specialized translators to produce accurate and high-quality translations. It argues that technical translation extends beyond linguistic transfer to encompass a thorough understanding of scientific and technical concepts, mastery of specialized terminology, and the effective use of documentation resources, research strategies, and expert consultation whenever necessary. The study outlines the principal stages of technical translation, including text analysis, comprehension, documentation, translation, revision, and quality assurance. It further emphasizes the importance of continuous professional training, information management, and the integration of modern technologies such as terminology databases, electronic corpora, and computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools in enhancing translators' performance. The paper concludes that successful technical translation relies on the integration of linguistic competence, subject-matter expertise, research skills, and professional ethics, thereby ensuring the accurate and effective transfer of specialized knowledge to the intended audience.
