Abstract
ABSTRACT: This article has seemed of great interest to us regarding the topic of Spanish possessions in North Africa under the reign of the Habsburgs. We aim to focus on the historical events related to the specific and rapid military successes resulting from the chaotic situation in the Maghreb. These successes led to the conquest of key points along the Maghreb's coastal strip, making the two cities of Oran and Mers El Kébir Spanish possessions. When discussing Mediterranean corsairs, most studies refer to the Barbary pirates. In this regard, we are particularly interested in evaluating the Spanish presence in these Maghreb enclaves. To carry out this work, it is important to provide a brief historical overview of Spanish presence in North Africa, with emphasis on the events that occurred in Oran. This city has represented considerable importance in the hearts of Spaniards for centuries and has been closely connected to the Iberian Peninsula since its foundation. Oran holds a significant place in general historiography as a Spanish-controlled territory in North Africa, from 1509 and throughout most of the Early Modern period. Both cities are located in the former kingdom of Tlemcen, the ancient Roman province of Mauretania Caesariensis, which will also play a certain role
