Abstract
ABSTRACT: The functioning of the tragic in Ruy Blas by Victor Hugo and Lorenzaccio by Alfred de Musset, plays of the romantic drama of the 19th century, is perceptible through the analysis of the notions of space and time as essential index commodities. The authenticity of the dramatic action is guaranteed by the space which cannot be rid of time, this other explicit index of the tragedy apparent in the two texts used. By their obvious occurrence and their perfect mobility, these two notions were able to highlight the tragedy in question. The palace or the chamber most often turned out to be places where bitterness, boredom, neglect, irresponsibility, sadness and anguish prevail. These places have unfortunately shown themselves as the receptacle of crimes and horrors and have at the same time become areas of fatality. The tragedy is also contained in the very discourse of the characters. As for time, it has become the tragic landmark allowing the characters to achieve the realization of their plans. To carry out the investigations, sociocriticism, which is an approach to the literary fact focusing on the social universe present in the text, served as a method of approach and analysis.
RÉSUMÉ: Le fonctionnement du tragique dans Ruy Blas de Victor Hugo et Lorenzaccio d’Alfred de Musset, pièces du drame romantique du XIXe siècle, est perceptible à travers l’analyse des notions d’espaces et de temps comme denrées indicielles indispensables. L’authenticité de l’action dramatique est garantie par l’espace qui ne saurait se défaire du temps, cet autre indice explicite du tragique apparent dans les deux textes exploités. De par leur occurrence manifeste et leur parfaite mobilité, ces deux notions ont su mettre en lumière le tragique en question. Le palais ou la chambre se sont avérés être le plus souvent des lieux où l’amertume, l’ennui, le délaissement, l’irresponsabilité, la tristesse et l’angoisse prévalent. Ces endroits se sont malheureusement affichés comme le réceptacle des crimes et des horreurs et sont devenus par la même occasion des aires de la fatalité. Le tragique est aussi contenu dans le discours même des personnages. Quant au temps, il est devenu le repère tragique permettant aux personnages de parvenir à la réalisation de leurs desseins. Pour mener à bien les investigations, la sociocritique qui est une approche du fait littéraire s’attardant à l’univers social présent dans le texte a servi de méthode d’approche et d’analyse.
