Main Article Content
Abstract
ABSTRACT: The ancient hydraulic engineering of Oued Abiod (Aures) relies on a network of channels carved into the rock, dating back to ancient times, some of which are still used today by the local population to irrigate their orchards. Many historians and researchers believe that these channels and all the ancient hydraulic structures are the work of the Romans. They were constructed during the Roman occupation of North Africa, denying the possibility that they were a local creation. This judgment is due to the fact that the Imazighen are among those peoples of the world who have been overlooked because they did not manage to write their own history. All their exploits and achievements are thus attributed to other peoples, especially considering that history is often written by the victor and endured by the vanquished. In this article, we undertake a field study to describe some ancient hydraulic monuments built on the banks of Oued Abiod. The contribution is part of Berber anthropological studies and water history. It aims to shed light on certain hydraulic aspects that have withstood the test of time and compare them with the notes and writings of historians.
