Abstract

Any discussion of the desired development of the seventh art (cinema) will inevitably involve modernizing and developing translation as a universal language. Timeless films, which have served as intermediaries between different peoples, could not have reached such linguistic boundaries without various forms of audiovisual translation, including subtitling and dubbing. Furthermore, the remarkable advancements in the film industry and computer science have revolutionized subtitling methods and techniques, adding a new dimension to the field of translation. To address this, we will present the historical context and explore the various translation strategies and techniques used in cinematographic subtitling. This will be followed by a case study of the electronic subtitling of the film "Opium and the Stick" by director Ahmed Rachedi. All of this aims to establish a theoretical foundation for the various forms of audiovisual translation in the Arab world, a field of research that promises much in the near future.
