Abstract

This study aims to reveal the relationship between mother-child interaction and postpartum depression and the nature of psychological functioning of mothers suffering with postpartum depression, allowing an understanding of the peculiarities that underlie this maternal depressive response and the quality of the reaction associated with it.

This study was based on the clinical approach, using tools to achieve our objectives: the clinical interview, «Beck» scale of depression, the «Edimbourg» postpartum depression scale, the initial mother-child interaction evaluation scale for «Bobigny», and a Rorschach like a projective technique in order to determine the characteristics of psychological functioning, of these moms. And this is based on a research group of 10 cases.

Finally, we concluded that mother-child interaction of mothers with postpartum depression is disturbed, and that their psychic functioning is characterized by vulnerability and poverty of internal resources. This makes us insist on the need to continue research in the field of motherhood, maternal mental health, and mother-child interaction in the Algerian environment, and to enrich this field theoretically and practically.
