The significance of religion in Freud from Ricoeur's point of view

Abstract

In this study before us, we aim to address the problem of religion at Freud from Ricoeur's point of view, as it is well known that the philosopher Paul Ricoeur has singled out a huge work labeled "On Interpretation as an Attempt at Freud" and devoted an important part to Freud in his book "Conflict of Interpretation" What is remarkable is that what caught Ricoeur's attention in these two books in particular, and some of the articles he published in various fields in general, It is the problem of religion within the limits of totemism, the problem of prohibition and taboo, desire, ambiguity, illusion, dream...etc. Allthese concepts, in Ricoeur's view, are suitable to be preliminary issues that provide the hermeneutical researcher with fertile keys to re-reading the philosophy of religion or what is currently known as the essence of the hermeneutics of religion. As we will try in this article; Provoking a philosophical dialogue, or a polemical debate if we like - between Ricoeur and Freud - to stop the institutionalization of religion in the eyes of both of them. And digging up the importance of Freud at present, especially in those discourses concerning the philosophy of religion, as certainly envisioned by the philosopher Ricoeur.
