SFL as a Tool for Teaching Translation Translating Interpersonal Metafunction’s Modality

Abstract

This research paper offers an overview of how systemic functional linguistics can be used as both a theoretical framework and a useful tool for teaching translation given that both are concerned with meaning. In addition, it analyses modality, and shows how the examination of its systems helps translation students assess the lexico-grammatical choices made by translators in target texts. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study examines two parallel English-Arabic popular science texts. The methodology involves a systematic comparative analysis of modality markers in both source and target texts, examining modal verbs, adjuncts, and expressions at lexico-grammatical and semantic levels. The findings reveal that analyzing modality systems through systemic functional linguistics helps students grasp the significance of metalinguistic elements in translation, thus enabling them to make more informed decisions when translating modality in popular science texts. This approach enhances students' awareness of cross-linguistic modal expressions and their semantic implications.
