Use of Information Communication Technology in Spoken English learning in selected Public and Private Secondary Schools in ESL Classroom

Abstract

The English language plays a prominent role in education in Nigeria and the school provides the most viable formal setting in which it could be studied. This research attempts to identify the extent of utilisation of Information Communication Technology components in the teaching and learning of spoken English in selected private/public secondary schools ESL Classroom. Twenty-five respondents each was selected from four public schools, 20 from two private schools and 20 English language teachers. These respondents responded to fifteen questions on required ICT facilities. Each respondent‟s cumulative responses was calculated and converted to simple percentages. Findings from the public secondary schools’ overall responses revealed that majority of the ICT facilities that can facilitate spoken English lessons were not readily available nor utilised, with higher percentages of 90%, 92%, 96%, respectively attesting to their non-availability and non-utilisation. For the private secondary schools though, some respondents attested to their availability but personal observation revealed that these facilities were scanty and not maximally utilised. This investigation concludes that there is the need for government and educational administrators to be ICT driven in order to enhance a better performance and achieve international intelligibility for Nigerian spoken English.

Julianah Ajoke Akindele , Osun State University-Nigeria

Julianah Ajoke Akindele is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English and Literary Studies, Osun State University, Osogbo, Nigeria.  Her academic interest focus on the use of spoken language to investigate societal issues and L2 speech perception, production, and comprehension challenges. This has hugely influenced her interest as a Phonologist, and Socio and Applied Linguist.

Victor Ayomide Fabunmi, Osun State University- Nigeria

Victor Fabunmi is a Postgraduate student in the Department of English and Literary Studies, at Osun State University, Osogbo, Nigeria. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and International Studies and a Master of Arts Degree in English (Language) from Osun State University. His academic interest focus is on Applied and Forensic Phonology. He is a committed and highly proactive researcher who is always ready to take up challenges and get positive results.

Richard Akano, Osun State University- Nigeria

Richard Akano is a lecturer at the Department of English and Literary Studies. He has a BA Degree in English and International Studies and an MA Degree in the English language from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
