Abstract

Translator’s Note as a Cognitive Dissonance Manifestation

The "translator's note" as a case of cognitive addition manifests itself as a translation technique, the use of which is motivated by the search for a consonant state, following a situation of cognitive dissonance generated by the disagreement with the source author, through the adoption of the mechanism called "cognitive addition". Thus, the analysis in the light of the psycho-sociological theory of cognitive dissonance, and the use of "translation notes" in a historical text, highlights the disagreement present between the meanings of the source text and the translator's thinking. Such an approach would shed light on a part of the psychological (cognitive) process in the translator's mind, through these spaces that he uses to make his intellectual presence felt.
