Abstract

Problems of Teaching Vocabulary in Classes of German as a Foreign Language

Learning vocabulary and its application in oral and written communication is an essential part of foreign language teaching. Due to its complexity, its dynamics and its volume, deficits and learning difficulties are identified in the learning of vocabulary, which are due to subjective and objective factors. Based on teaching practice, this article attempts to use a small analysis to address some of the problems of acquiring and using vocabulary in the classroom of German as a foreign language, taking into account the culture-specific conditions of Algerian students, without claiming to be a recipe for an optimal to give vocabulary work. Teaching practice has shown that vocabulary work causes great difficulties for teachers and learners. When acquiring vocabulary, the learner encounters problems that are to be assessed differently. Not infrequently, the teacher is faced with the problem of selecting the vocabulary and teaching it. The vocabulary is subject to constant changes compared to the grammar, which is taught using rules. This is why there are difficulties in determining learning goals and scope, making vocabulary learning difficult. According to Piepo, mediation takes place when “the teacher has mastered the art of teaching in short and varied phases while constantly resorting to what has already been mastered and what still needs to be consolidated. " Vocabulary work consists not only of introducing new vocabulary but of embedding it in contextual relationships.
