Abstract

With the Internet and its diverse possibilities, the interactive testing/assessment of foreign language skills, here in the field of German as a foreign language/second language, found its way into this medium relatively early. At first it was the publishers for German as a foreign language and second language who made language proficiency tests available in printed versions on the Internet with the appropriate books to better allocate learners to the appropriate language groups, but language schools, further education institutes and other institutions quickly followed suit Internet sites made language tests available for printing in order to better classify their learners. This article focuses then on online language proficiency tests and gives a brief description of some tests, namely DIALANG, and Testpodium. This leads to the fact that the brief description of the various programs should show the claim and reality of computer-assisted or internet-based language proficiency tests, which, with a number of other programs, definitely qualify as diagnostic and placement tests.
