Around The Concept Of Presidium The case of Oran
The penal colony’s north Africans are original spaces of a politics of tactical - military character and they were playing a role of the military garrison who defended the garrisons, beside taking it as a fundamental function of acting as the first defensive line, against the assaults towards the peninsular territory from the North African coasts or the Oriental Mediterranean, in case of Spain. Furthermore, being penitentiary places where sentences are fulfilled by ordinary or military crimes. The western historiography has given many attentions to the Hispanic penal colony’s in the north African littoral, considering them like frontier spaces; to have been designated like this, and over the centuries, the studies have qualified them as geographical, urban borders and occasionally economic, and geopolitical and religious borders. This way, Oran initially a Maghrebi city as other possessions north Africans turned into prison but also into frontier city and shared with these spaces the same history from the beginning up to the definitive dislocation of most of these enclaves.
