Abstract

Eloquent Impact of Borrowed and Arabicized Words in Translation: Analysis of loanwords in Al- Ghazāli’s work «'Al-munqid min addalâl (Erreur et Délivrance)» and «Le livre des Bons Usages en Matière de Mariage»

The Arabisation of words is a practice frequently used in translation by Arabs. This process involves borrowing certain words from other languages and modifying their phonetics by incorporating specific sounds or adapting them to ensure optimal integration within the Arabic language. Additionally, some words undergo semantic modifications according to the intended context, significantly enriching the Arabic lexicon by introducing new words and terms that become essential components of the language. These words are often indispensable in specific domains for a thorough understanding of texts. These linguistic elements have stood the test of time, integrating seamlessly into the Arabic language, where they perform both specialized and everyday functions. In the context of the translation into French of two works by Al-Ghazāli « Al-munqid Min Addalâl (Erreur et Délivrance) » and « Le livre des Bons Usages en Matière de Mariage », it is notable that several borrowed and Arabicized words have not been transposed into French. They remain in their original state of arabisation and are accompanied by their equivalent or an annotated explanation. The translator’s decision to retain these borrowed and Arabicised words, motivated by a variety of considerations, reflects, among other things, a desire to convey specific messages from the original author. This choice underlines a commitment to preserving the semantic depth of the original texts while honoring the cultural and linguistic richness of the Arabic language. These words lend deep meaning to the analysed texts and add a semantic dimension to the works in both Arabic and French. This approach is aimed at a French readership that is either erudite or eager to explore the many facets of this author’s works while respecting the integrity of Al-Ghazāli’s writings. It guarantees the preservation of the richness and subtleties of the original texts, offering an authentic and complete reading experience.
